About Us

Who We Are

The Liberian Association of Virginia (LAVA) is a community organization headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, established to serve and represent Liberians throughout the Commonwealth. We are a home away from home — a gathering place where heritage is honored, relationships are built, and the next generation stays connected to its roots.

Our Mission

LAVA exists to promote the social, cultural, and educational interests of our members while building understanding between the Liberian community and our fellow Virginians. We work to foster genuine connection with residents across the Commonwealth who share a commitment to the welfare of the Liberian community, and to raise awareness of the issues that matter most to us.

Preserving Our Heritage

At the heart of everything we do is a commitment to preserving Liberian culture. We believe our traditions — our language, food, music, dress, and customs — are not relics of the past but living contributions to the rich multicultural fabric of Virginia. Through our programs and events, we work to keep these traditions alive for our members and to share them proudly with our friends and neighbors.

Join Us

Whether you're a Liberian-born, a descendant of the diaspora, or simply someone who cares about our community's welfare, there's a place for you at LAVA. Together, we're building a stronger, more connected Liberian community in Virginia — one rooted in culture, driven by purpose, and open to all who share our vision.
